Class Descriptions

All training classes are free to students that have either a Computing Pass or are Residence Hall Residents.
General Training classes occur at their scheduled times in Thompson Room 1, whereas Video Editing classes take place at the CUE Lab.

SCS Training Classes

Animation Master

Type: General Training

Animation Master is a complete all-in-one modeling, rendering and animation program for your home computer. This class will give an introduction to Animation Master’s interface and functions. We will cover basic animation techniques, modeling, action creation, character animation, and scene creation.

ASP.net

Type: General Training

This class delves into the dynamic web development world of ASP.net. The class covers the differences between Static and Dynamic pages, and the concepts of developing in the .NET framework. The goal of the class is to develop a basic weblog.

Computer Basics

Type: General Training

Our Computer Basics class was designed as an easy solution for those of us who find ourselves challenged in our computer knowledge. It is an open platform from which students can draw specific answers to their individual questions. In the past we have focused on computer buying and upgrading, computer maintenance, and Internet use. The instructors will explain computer jargon in an understandable way. Finally, all questions are heartily welcomed (and answered!)

Digital Music Editing - Audacity

Type: General Training

In Digital Music Editing - Audacity, you will be able to explore the world of digital music/audio editing on their computer. You will learn how to set up their computer for digital recording and editing audio and music files. Using the open-source audio editor Audacity, topics such as audio cropping, pitch shifting, audio mastering, and mp3 encoding will be discussed. By the end of this class you should feel confident in being able to record a simple audio file, edit it, and publish it as your own mp3.

Digital Photography

Type: General Training

Our Digital Photography class is organized to help the novice photographer in familiarizing him/herself with the new digital age. We will explain the buzz words and technology terms associated with choosing and using a digital camera. Also, we will provide tips and tricks on taking photos and making prints.

Dreamweaver

Type: General Training

Created by the same company as the Internet animation language Flash, Macromedia Dreamweaver is a visual program to help create and maintain websites. In this class we will introduce you to the basic functions of the program. Knowledge of HTML is not necessary for this class, but will greatly expand the user friendliness of the program.

Final Cut Pro

Type: Video Editing

Final Cut Pro is a sophisticated non-linear digital video editing application that is suitable for editing professional video. This course is aimed at beginners who have some basic understanding of digital video editing but would like to learn a more powerful application. During the course we will learn the basic settings for capturing video, configuring the application, importing data and exporting a final project. We will use tutorial media to take you through the process of putting a project together and will discuss exporting it to different formats including DVD, VHS and the web.

Flash

Type: General Training

Macromedia Flash MX is a wonderful tool for the creation of interactive and graphical websites. Using Flash, you can develop content such as animations, interactive web navigation controls, interactive web sites, games and movies.

iMovie

Type: Video Editing

This course is for the novice iMovie user. The student will be able to make a short movie using the easy editing features that iMovie offers. The class will cover importing video, importing still images, music clips, and alternate source such as a VHS source. Then editing options are covered such as splicing clips, trimming clips, and advanced editing video and music clips. Finally, you are taught how to export your video in respect to what it will be used for, weather it will be sent to grandma as a high quality version on VHS or sent through email as a MPEG.

Introduction to Web Design Parts I & II

Type: General Training

As the basic language behind all websites, HTML is the universal language of the Internet. Our series of HTML workshops will help a completely new learner familiarize themselves with the inherent simplicity and power of HTML. You will learn how HTML works and why it works how it does. You will be given the tools to create your own personal website. These classes have been designed to introduce and grow the knowledge and abilities of the beginner, novice and intermediate student of HTML.

Linux/UNIX Parts I & II

Type: General Training

Covers the basics of Unix and Linux including a brief history of the two, and their uses. How to log in to a system, basics of the command line and the directory structure, moving about in different directories, copying and moving files from one place to another. Also covers introductory use of command line e-mail, ftp, and text editing tools. Linux/Unix II will cover searching tools, software and installation.

Microsoft Access

Type: General Training

This class, as part of our Microsoft XP series, will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the basics of design and development of databases within Microsoft Access. Students will create a simple database and simple queries. This class is designed to give students a solid foundation for further development of the complex functions of Access.

Microsoft Excel

Type: General Training

This class, as part of our Microsoft Office XP series, explains many of the functions of Microsoft Excel. The student will gain a comprehensive understanding of the use of spreadsheets and their many applications in today’s world.

Microsoft Office 2007 - Key Changes

Type: General Training

Microsoft Office 2007, coming in January, will look and feel vastly different from any other Microsoft applications. Come learn about the new ‘ribbon’ interface, new functionality, and new file formats while test driving the latest beta version. This class is recommended for anyone that supports Microsoft Office in their workspace, or anyone who is curious about the latest changes to the leading office-productivity suite.

Microsoft Powerpoint

Type: General Training

During the beginning PowerPoint class you will learn how to create a slide-presentation. This presentation will include charts and graphs, WordArt, animation, and slide transitions. You will also learn how to use the Slide Master, and learn how to maneuver through the different views in PowerPoint. We will also discuss the difference between a template and the auto content wizard, how to save, and the different ways you can print.

Microsoft Word

Type: General Training

In this beginning class, we will learn how to use the basic features of Word. For example, how to use tabs, charts, tables, word art and clip art. We will also go over how to customize the tool bars, use drawing tools, short-cut keys and saving, printing and much more.

MiniTab

Type: General Training

There are few public programs that are as easy to use as Minitab. However, this great program was not designed for everyone. Minitab is a specialized program designed for statistical analysis of data. Its use requires, at least, a basic knowledge of statistical tools and their functions. In our introduction class, students will be shown the location of many commands used in the beginning statistics. We will demonstrate how to properly organize data within the program and how to quickly discover different statistical formulas.

Photoshop I

Type: General Training

This course is a good beginner course, for those who have little to no experience using Photoshop. Topics covered are; an introduction to computer graphics with respect to the images application. A familiarization with the pallets, layers, tools, selection methods is covered. At the end the class applies what was learned into one or more step-by-step tutorials.

Photoshop II

Type: General Training

This course is for the Photoshop user that has used Photoshop and is somewhat familiar with some of the functionality, but wants to better understand some of the more advanced features that can greatly increase efficiency, professionalism and productivity when using Photoshop. The class covers the file browser, commands such as brightness/contrast, levels, curves, healing brush. Instruction on creating and using an action are covered. Then finally an advanced tutorial that applies the objectives in the class is done step-by-step.

PHP for Programmers

Type: General Training

If you already have experience working with a programming or scripting language, PHP will be a snap to pick up. PHP is perhaps the most popular web scripting language, and it is heavily based on the C family of programming languages. Any experience in C, C++, Javascript, or similar languages will help immensely in this course. The content of PHP I and PHP II are condensed into this one class for an accelerated experience with more hands-on projects to work on. Knowledge of HTML and at least one programming/scripting language are required for this course.

PHP I & II

Type: General Training

PHP is perhaps the most popular scripting language to build dynamic web pages. These two courses are intended for someone who has never programmed in any scripting language before. PHP I will ease the web designer into the idea of a scripting language, as well as the basics of PHP syntax. PHP II will develop the concepts learned in PHP I and covers the many functions available in PHP to produce almost any web page the designer wants. These courses assume that the student has a basic understanding of HTML. If you already have experience with a scripting or programming language, it is recommended that you instead take PHP for Programmers, an accelerated course that skips the introductory concepts of PHP I.

Pinnacle

Type: Video Editing

Pinnacle Studio 9.0 is a powerful, easy-to-use video editing software. This class will teach you the ins and outs of Studio: capture home movies and video to your computer, edit them, add titles and interactive menus, music, narration and special effects and then output your edited masterpiece to videotape, DVD, camcorder, and the Internet. It's as easy as 1,2,3.

Premiere

Type: Video Editing

Project 2003

Type: General Training

Project 2003 can help you to manage schedules, resources, plan, execute and document your projects. This course will teach you what you need to know to confidently manage your projects with Microsoft Project.

Resume Writing

Type: General Training

Having a quality resume can make a difference when it comes to getting a job. Often it is the first thing that a person looks at to decide if they will interview you. Learn the skills that are needed to put together a resume that won’t get ignored or tossed because of an improper look. Also learn what content to put on it so that it will get the most attention.
